We learn a little history as, years ago a human fleet arrives at a new planet.  Vash and Knives are traveling in this ship and they apparently aren't human.  Their friend is a woman named Rem but one of the crew thinks that they are monsters and treats them so.  Events unfold such that Knives dislike everything human whereas Vash wants to protect them.  Knives set the ships on a collision course with the new planet but Rem, sacrificing herself, is able to get the breaking jets to come on.
