Kino meets a man who is in the desert and gives him water.  He gives her a book so that she can trade it in and get another book in the Land of Books.  This leads to an interesting visit when Kino gets involved in a struggle between the underground publisher's guild and the critics who only approve "safe" books to read.  Is Kino living as a character in book?
