Some of Angel's history is revealed in this episode.  Giles is called in to look at a obelisk that was just discovered.  Before anything can be found out about it, Angel steals it.  It contains the demon Acathla who, when awoken by pulling out the sword stuck into his chest, will open a gateway to the hell dimension thus sucking our dimension into Hell.
