Gasping for breath you reach Gallows Hill.  Low in the sky, Halley's Comet is steaming across the heavens.  You drop your eye-line.  In the shadows you can just pick out three burly figures doing something round a huge cone of what looks suspiciously like brushwood, sticks and logs.

Suddenly you hear Peri scream with fear.  'I'm not one of the witches of Salem!' she yells.  But, of course, the burly men have never heard of Salem.

'That's not for another couple of hundred years,' you think.

'All the same, you'll do!' the leading burly man shouts raucously.

They quickly have Peri tied to a stake on top of the brushwood with stout cords and ropes.  Peri screams blue murder until they stop her mouth with a filthy scarf wrenched from round the neck of the smallest of the burly men.

'Blue murder?' the leading heavy cries.  'Nonsense.  This is God's work.'  He steps to a brazier burning cosily by the tall gallows.  He picks up a long wooden torch.  He plunges it into the glowing embers of charcoal.  Immediately, the end of the torch blazes into flames with a flickering smoky flare.  Sickeningly, it lights up the faces of Peri and of the two assisstants, as you suppose they are.  All three gather round the huge pile of brushwood.

'Let's see what colour she burns, eh?' the leader chuckles.  'Let's!' his henchmen chime.

'If she burns red, she's a witch.  If green, she's innocent.'

'Say, Boss!' one of the henchmen says thickly, 'if she's innocent, won't it be too late to save her?'

'Don't confuse me, Fritz!' the Boss barks out.  'You're blinding me with science as usual.  Anyway, perhaps she's colour-blind.  Then she won't know.'

'Right, Boss!'  Fritz says. He knows on which side his bread is buttered.

Fritz shouts, 'Roast the young witch!'  The Boss raises the torch on high.  Just then the Doctor and Turlough leap out from behind the huge pile of wood about to be Peri's funeral pyre.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
