WITH GREAT RESPECT

This immodest gift book is dedicated to E. K. Gaylord, my friend and colleague for 29 years. Mr. Gaylord is the most influential and the most misunderstood citizen of Oklahoma. In all my years as Managing Editor of his two great newspapers, I have never been asked to do an unethical thing.

SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 1942
Last night I made a speech at Palo Alto for my friend "Chuck" Bush, head of Leland Stanford's School of Journalism. The regular session of the California Press Association was being held there.
One of the pleasures of the visit was meeting Arthur W. McBride, who shocked me by looking like an old man. He has a little weekly newspaper some 30 miles from L. A. We were reporters together in Sioux City 35 years ago. He is 58 now. That is not far beyond my 53, yet it seems incredible that I might be considered in the same decade with McBride, and that I am definitely on the museum piece list to the average adolescent in his thirties.
Most of these editors still run true to form - more concerned with the petty details of making a dollar to keep in black ink than in waging total war against the Axis. They are not really editors - they are men who were civic minded who now have property to protect. The old story of the penniless social reformer who died a rich standpatter.
It was so beautiful and quiet on the sprawling campus that I stayed all night in the Union and drank deep of Sunday's thick, hot sunshine.
Doc Griffith, now a Navy Lieutenant, has been transferred from the Alameda base to Moffet Field, which is near Sunnyvale and only 5 miles from Palo Alto. He was Oklahoma Publishing Company's dentist, remember?
He has a little empire all his own at Moffet. He's the only tooth carpenter. The station complement is about 400. It is a blimp base. The small lighter-than-air, which patrol beyond the heads, are housed in the big dirigible shed. Twelve can nest there inflated. One couple lives there now, the children having all trudged their lumbering way eastward to help spot submarines in the crucial Atlantic costal waters.
Rolled past an orchard of Bing cherries - every limb crutched up under a burden of purplish red fruit - a luscious, fragrant sight for an Oklahoman whose aspiring fruit is always frost bitten before it ripens into glory.

Quotes
These headlines are written often at the insistence of uneducated circulation managers, who know nothing except how to husle sheets, and insist on a bigger headline and a more startling shock than the opposition has.
The War Years
Walter M Harrison
News came today of the withdrawal of Gen. W. S. Key from the command of the 45th Division. He has been given some overseas assignment as a palliative.... The home folks will say that Key got a bad deal because he was a National Guard Major General. But the fact is that Key did not study and prepare himself tactically in the crucial years before the emergency. Some of my old comrades will think me disloyal to my ex-commander, but the general staff knows what it is doing - and it will not send our sons into hell behind division leaders it is not satisfied with.

But when it comes to boat drill I note that the crew acts as if it were for pay - no fooling! They know what to do in an emergency and will do it.

I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
See my
goodreads
page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my
