THE GHOST IN THE SHELL
攻殻機動隊

March 6, 2035.  Motoko Aramaki is a hyper-advanced cyborg, a counter-terrorist Net security expert heading the investigative department of the giant multinational Poseidon Industrial.  Partly transcending the physical world and existing in a virtual world of networks, Motoko is a fusion of multiple entities and identities deploying remotely controlled prosthetic humanoid surrogates around the globe to investigate a series of bizarre incidents.  Meanwhile, Tamaki Tamai, a psychic detective from the Channeling Agency, has been commissioned to explore strange changes in the temporal universe brought about by two forces, one represented by the teachings of a professor named Rahampol, the other by the complex, evolving Moto entity.  What unfolds will all be in a day's work - a day that will change everything, forever.

The long-awaited sequel to Shirow Masamune's groundbreaking The Ghost in the Shell, and one of the most, highly anticipated graphic novel events in many years, Man-Machine Interface is Shirow's most ambitious and complex story yet, with deep forays into philosophy and the meaning of artificial life, intelligence, and existence.  Utilizing awe-inspiring digital effects on a level never before seen in the annals of graphic fiction, Shirow has raised the bar for what can be achieved, page after page!

Notes:
From AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY in the Graphic Novel Ghost in the Shell:

In 1983, Shirow Masamune published his first manga, "Black Magic" from Atlas, a science fiction dojin manga society (dojin is the Japanese term to describe an amateur fan publication).

In 1985, Shirow's first major work, "Appleseed," was published by Seishinsha, without being serialized in or submitted to a manga magazine, which is quite rare in the Japanese manga publishing industry.  Shortly thereafter, Shirow set up his own company, and besides working on his own manga and illustration work, took on projects from the anime and game industry, as well as designing pens, air guns, and computer mice.  Since 1996, he has created his artwork through the computer, and from 2000, graphics work in color, writing, and project development has occupied most of his time.  He does not consider himself a mainstream professional manga artist, but his fans and supporters in the industry consider him to be one of the all-time great manga creators.  Since before the days of the anime movement, Shirow's work has been recognized and highly respected outside Japan.  He has been active in numerous anime and game projects but it is rare for him to take the helm of such projects, or even to have his name used prominently.

Shirow Masamune was born in Japan in Chuo Ward, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, on November 23, 1961.  He still lives in the same district.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
