   US Figure Skating Team Killed in Plane Crash
The US figure skating team was killed in a plane crash in Berg-Kampenhout, Belgium.  The eighteen member team was on its way to the 1961 World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

   Six Flags Opens
Six Flags Over Texas, first in the Six Flags chain, located on 212 acres in Arlington, Texas, opened.  Five days later, on August 5, the park had its official grand opening.
