United States 7/18/1969 Ted Kennedy Drove into a Pond on Chappaquiddick Island Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy of Massachusetts left a party on Chappaquiddick Island and soon after drove an Oldsmobile off a bridge and into a pond. He escaped, but Mary Jo Kopechne died.
