King James II demanded the surrender of the charter that had been granted by his brother Charles II in 1667 afer his death.  He did not like the charters that had been granted by the previous monarch. According to stories, the moment that the crown's representative, Sir Edmund Andros, was about take possession of the charter, the candles at the Assembly were all extinguished.  During the confusion the charter disappeared.  It was hidden in the hollow of a white oak.
