Vincent awakens in a tower above a strange city.  He has been rescued by Kazukisu Hauer, the master of the tower.  He learns that this is the source of the AutoReivs that had attacked the men before.  Kazukisu talks to him about his role in the death of a Proxy, his love named Senekisu.  Vincent does not understand and when Kazukisu insists that he is a Proxy becomes more confused.  After more discussion, Kazukisu determines that Vincent has caused himself to forget who he is and is thus a coward.  He intends to kill Vincent for this and the death of Senekisu.  Vincent turns into the Proxy and when Kazukisu asks again what he calls himself he tells him he is the Ergo Proxy - he who brings death.
