A rift opening brings forth a man in old fashioned military garb.  He contacts Jack and they meet up in a bar where they kiss and then fight.  The rest of Torchwood, getting used to having Jack back after a long absence, track them down.  The man is named John and he's here to fulfill a dying woman's wish - to find three radioactive canisters that have come through the rift.  They group agrees to help at Jack's insistence but John has other ideas.  After putting Torchwood out of commission and knocking Jack off a tall building, he begins to put together the pieces that the team helped him recover.  Before he's finished, however, Torchwood returns with Jack in tow to a bemused John.  John tells them that the pieces are in fact a message that will tell him where a very valuable gem is located.  When he opens it a bomb attaches to him with a ten minute fuse.  He take Gwen hostage in hopes that Jack and Torchwood can do something to help him.
