Yukito Kunisaki arrives in a town hungry and tired.  He attempts to make some money with his puppet shows but no one is interested enough in them.  He falls asleep and awakens to find a strange girl named Misuzu Kamio.  She takes him to her house and gives him food and tells him that he can stay there.  When her mother Haruko Kamio comes home, she eventually agrees that he can stay in the shed.
