Kino makes her way toward a country that is infamous with other travelers in how rude they are toward them.  She wants to experience this herself.  What she finds is a country of extremely friendly people.  She taken by a young girl and shown the sites of the city and considers staying more that her normal three days.  She's kicked out of the city though since she was only given a three day pass.  That night on a cliff above the city she witnesses a volcano eruption that covers the city and kills everyone.  She later finds notes left to her in the things that the people had given her about how they’d known about the volcano but elected to stay in their homes anyway.  They tell of how they’d acted in the past and how they decided to change their ways so that their legacy would not end badly.
