Kino takes fishes off a raft in a river and recalls some of the people she's met on her journeys. She remember a man who killed a woman's husband but is now going to a trip with her as her body guard. She remembers how the woman killed the man when they got out on the road. She also remembers a couple who were travelling unarmed in order to show everyone that it can be done peacefully. She also remembers how the man was secretly guarding the woman with his gun. She also remembers arriveing at a wise old man's house and talking with him. He tells her about what had happened to him and how his inaction and lack of desire appeared to others to be wisdom.
