Satsuki, her little brother Keiichirou and father move to a new town.  On the first day of school, she is sidetracked by their cat, Kaya, who runs into the old school building.  She and her brother go to get him but are followed by their neighbor Hajime and his friend Leo who try to scare them.  They all get scared when Momoko shows up looking for her lost hat.  While the group of kids are looking for the hat and cat, they run into a few ghosts and run crazily through the old school.  Finally Amanojaku appears and starts causing problems.  When they run from him, they find themselves in the old principal's office where Satsuki sees a photo of her grandmother and hidden inside the frame is a Ghost Diary that belonged to her mother.  Using the diary they are able to send Amanojaku back to sleep in the trees.  Later it is pointed out that the trees have all been cut down and they wonder where Amanojaku has gone.  They don't have to wait long to find out when Kaya the cat starts talking to them.
