AD Police: To Serve and Protect is an anime series (spinoff of Bubblegum Crisis) that was created by Japanese animation studio AIC, the same people that produced the Tenchi Muyo! series. The 12-episode story revolves around the AD (Advanced) Police, a special attack squad dedicated to stopping rogue boomers. Boomers (pronounced "voomers" in the Japanese version) are humanoid robots that do menial human tasks, such as cleaning, cashiering, and construction. However, some boomers go berserk, and when they do it's up to the AD Police to stop them. The series has a prequel called AD Police Files.

AD Police: To Serve and Protect is available in North America in a 2-disc special edition DVD from ADV Films. The original series is on DVD from Animeigo.

From Wikipedia
Overview:

This takes places in the Bubblegum Crisis 2040 universe and happens a few years before the events in BGC 2040.  The show revolves around Kenji Sasaki and his partner Hans Kleif and their branch of the AD Police.  I won't go into details about the Bubblegum Crisis universe here, just that they are a police force dedicated to taking out rogue Boomers and operate separately from the normal police.

The story picks up with Kenji just as he looses his third partner.  Soon after he is joined by his new partner Hans and we go through the standard “breaking in” period.  After a few episodes of mindless Boomer battles in which supped up machines are completely inadequate against humans with hand guns, a plot starts to appear.

You don't have to be versed in BGC lore to understand this show.  You don't really have to be versed in anything to understand it, actually.  This is a rather plain police "drama" with a few sci-fi elements thrown in.  The characters are somewhat shallow and their relationships never really develop.  The one episode that does something with this is "Memory" but, by the end of the show, you really don't feel much for them one way or another.

Music:

Not memorable.  I don’t understand the discolored girl floating around during the ending sequence (I assume she is Keni's girlfriend).  She really has nothing to do with the story so, what?

Animation:

The animation is average.  Boomers and flying mecha all look sort of muddy to me (my term for lumpy drawings with little details).

Suggestions:

This show contains violence, language and police situations.  I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone under 13.  If you are a BGC fan, watch it but don’t expect a lot out it.  If not, you may want to pass on this one.

Favorite Scenes:

In "Bargaining" when Kenji and Hans are heavily outnumbered by military grade Boomers.  They run around in the open with their hand guns and annihilate them.  I think whoever is buying those Boomers may want to rethink their possible effectiveness.  What can I say, I had to laugh at this one.

Japanese Lyrics:

English Lyrics:

Tonight, I'm called by your magical power, diving into the Night Tripper.
In this love, I strike the MUCHI and perform the EKUSUTASHII without mercy.
Sweet invitations gnaw at my brain.
A MARIONETTO is dancing on the palm of my hand.
Caught in your mysterious charm, I can't show the SHADOO of my invitation.
No matter how deep I yearn, I can't easily break free from the wave.
With silver NEIRU, I sketch a heart.
Are you an angel, or are you a devil?!

A glass doll, wound up like a machine,
Can vanish the moment I embrace it.
A distorted space of a clockwork,
Who could you be, splendid yet untrustworthy?

Am I just longing for an illusion? Day Sleeper,
Even knowing it's a trap, I can't take control.
ENPUTI SOORU,
The poison of BAACHARU courses through my body.
How much is a dream, and what is reality?!

An ice doll, wound up like a machine,
Melts away the moment I touch it.
A twisted maze of clockwork,
Where could you be, aesthetic and intellectual?

A glass doll, wound up like a machine,
Can vanish the moment I embrace it.
A distorted space of a clockwork,
Who could you be, splendid yet untrustworthy?

English Lyrics:

"Even in Hell,
There will be a side of the radiant Light."
That was what you taught me.

If it is without you,
It will be like the far away past,
Unable to lift my spirits,
Even courage fades into emptiness,
Will not even know how to deal with important matters,
And foolishly living on without planning for the future.

On the other side of the mirror,
There hides a fantasia dream,
But it is something I will never be able to grasp.

What do you yearn for?
You never said a word,
Your face only reflects the ashen Darkness.
